Judging criteria
• Scientific content – The entry presents facts, ideas,
theories and main positions accurately and fairly.
• Context – The entry provides essential context and
background so that the public can understand the issues. Where appropriate,
context includes any uncertainty surrounding the science or scientific
issue, a clear assessment of risks and probabilities and the history
of the issue.
• Implications – The entry clearly explains why its
topic is important, explores any ethical, social, economic or political
implications and policy options, including both positive and negative
aspects (and consequences) of the application of various forms of
research.
• Creative approach – The entry approaches the topic
from a new angle, or includes several important perspectives. The
journalist shows a critical awareness of their approach and possible
perspectives.
Awards ceremony
The Awards will be presented at our conference and banquet in Vancouver
on Nov. 10, 2007. You need not be present at the
conference to win.

Q: You quote that you allow two
submissions per person. Shall they be burnt on separate CDs,
or can I put two pieces on the same CD?
A: Please submit each entry
on a separate CD so that we avoid confusion when sending the
entries to the judges and to ensure that we do not overlook
any entries.
Q: You don't accept floppies anymore, by any chance?
A: Unfortunately we can not accept entries on floppy disk --
neither my laptop nor my desktop even have a floppy drive!
Q: By the way, do you want offprints, too, or does that only
apply to The Genome BC Society and Ethics Prize for Print Science
Journalism. Is that just an option to send prints instead of
the CDs or together with the CDs?
A: This is not an option to send printed material instead of
a CD. For print submissions it would be helpful to see how the
piece appeared in print (in addition to an electronic version
on CD). This can be: an original, a photocopy of the original,
or a scanned image included on the CD.
Q. We wanted to confirm whether or not the article had to be
about genetics, as it's The Genome BC Society and Ethics Prize.
A. The articles for the print category do not have to be about
genetics. That is simply the name that the sponsor (Genome BC)
wanted for the prize. |
